I have a 1983 ford 1510 with a shibaura 3cyl
deisel. The engine threw a rod with 185 hrs on it.
It appears that nothing caused this and possibly
the rod was defective. Any one seen or heard of this problem?

Factory service bulletin dated February 1985 stated the following: "An unknown number of 1510 tractor engines were produced with connecting rods that were machined out of tolerance. The suspect connecting rods were installed in 1510 tractors with a serial number range of UH 00001 through UH 01882." The bulletin went on to state that the warranty coverage on the engine had been extended to five years, but it looks like you're about a decade too late to take any advantage of that. Make sure when you rebuild your engine that you replace all 3 rods.

Have not seen this problem with the 3cyl's. What do the rod bearings & wrist pin/ bushing look like? How often did you change the oil?
