You can go to the nearest New Holland dealer, and their parts department may have a wiring illustration on microfilm. Or, you can get a shop manual for the 600 series from the sponsor, YT, of this board. Not sure I ever heard of a smoking VR, but it could happen. That VR is probably a "mechanical" type and something may be shorting. However, the VR is mounted in a very tight place and the smoke could be from something else. If you or someone has tried to convert the tractor to 12V with an alternator, then they may have messed something up, or you could have some correctly connected wires shorting under the hood near the VR. You could easily go to an internally regulated 12V alternator, which you might already have, and just bypass the VR if you wanted to. You'd have to convert to neg grounding on the battery, and change any light bulbs, including the headlights, to 12V. Also, if you are positive you have a model 600, they were only made in 1955,6,and 7. I have a 56 that was converted to 12V alternator and neg ground. So, take the serial number with you when you go looking or ordering the shop manual. RKS
