Has any one had any experience with these tractors. They are the small two and four wheel drive tractors that ford had out I think about 5-10 years ago. Will they do the same work as an "n" and hold up? Are they expensive to repair? What were some of their problems and good points? Deisel or gas? What about cost of a fair to good used one?

Any help would be great.

I bought a new 1700 4WD in 1982. Had a place near Denton, TX. I loved that little tractor. For most work -- road maintenance, feeding, and gardening -- it was superb, although some of the metal parts were flimsy and subject to metal fatigue. Maintenance was expensive, because parts had to come from Japan, but nowadays there are parts warehouses with thousands of cannibalized parts for virtually anything you might need. I caused most of my own maintenance problems by asking too much of the tractor, such as lifting 700-lb. round bales on a fork attached to the 3-pt. hitch. Usually, this resulted in front wheels off the ground and having to steer with the rear-wheel brakes. I especially like the little guy's cold-weather startability.

We are considering buying a Ford 1700 Compact Tractor, 1985 model. Can you tell me what front end loader fits it?

See my comments about 2-3 pages back concerning a 1700. These tractors were made in Japan. Fairly well engineered but by no means bulletproof. They do fine if you are aware of their limitations. There were no gas engines made for these rigs. As for what they are worth, can't help you there. If you can afford one, I myself would suggest a 20 series model (i.e. 1720). Night and day difference between those and the 1700-1710 tractors.
