I have the above-mentioned tractor. I have replace the alternator twice in the last couple months. The conversion includes a ballast resistor, inline with the 6v coil, and a recently added side marker bulb to excite the field in the alternator. After installing the new alternator I started the tractor and watched the ammeter. The needle moved to the charging range and then almost as quickly I heard a "click" and the ammeter showed the system discharging! I am at a total loss as to what to do next other than purchase a $200 conversion kit. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

Is this a one-wire alternator or the more standard version that requires the excitation and sense wiring?

If it's a one-wire, the way you have it wired should work.

If it's a standard version, do you have a wire from the BAT terminal to the sense terminal of the two-wire connector? If not, the alternator will not regulate and will quite likely destroy itself (maybe this is the "click"?) as it keeps trying to put out more and more current.

This is a three wire setup. One battery terminal on the rear of the alternator and a two spade plug on the side. The system has a ballast resistor with what is most probably a 6 volt coil.

There is a wire going from the plug to the battery terminal on the rear of the alternator.

I added the light bulb (excitation purposes) as a fix to the previous wiring configuration. I did notice that after I heard the "click" there was no longer a glow to the bulb. I examined the bulb and the filament was still intact. What do you think?

Thanks for your help.

Hmmm. This really does sound like the internal regulator has failed.

I wonder if you've got the two wires reversed on the alternator (if someone wants to jump in now would be a good time). I'll have to look at my 2N tonight -- I can never remember which one is which without looking.

You have removed the cutout relay / regulator that comes with the 8N? (Just checking.)

How about the grounding on the alternator? Is the mounting a good solid metal to metal connection?

About the only other thing I can think of is that most alternators come with a warning tag on them cautioning that using the alternator with a discharged battery could cause the regulator to fail. I've never seen it happen but the tag is there.

I am about as stumped as you. I do believe that the wires are correctly hooked up to the alternator, and I believe that it is well grounded. The relay that you are asking about is not wired in.

The interesting thing you mention about the dead battery is something that may have been the cause. The battery was completely dead (wouldn't turn the starter). Maybe I will charge the battery and then put a new alternator on and see what happens. I didn't see any warning tag on the alternator I purchased.

Thanks for your help.
