I have a 1958 600. It has a 172 engine but is otherwise pretty much original. It also has a fuel gauge, so I think that means it isn't the original tank. I need a new sending unit for the fuel gauge. To get the right part I need to know what tank I have. Is there any way I can tell what tank I have by looking at it?

First question I would ask is.....
Are you sure the tractor is a 1958 600. It may be that you inherited the serial number through a transmission change out.

Now back to the fuel tank. The tank might be from a 601/801. They used fuel gauges. The only way I would say to figure out which one you got is to measure its holding capacity. The 601 is 13 gals and the 801 is 17 gals.

Thanks for the help John. I was hoping not to drain & refill the tank.

I should have been more careful, my tractor is a 601. From what you say it sounds like the 601 could have come with a fuel gauge.

I'm pretty sure the rest of the tractor is original. From looking at my parts book and other tractors everything seems to be right. I honestly can't say if the transmission is original. The guy it came from was the second owner. He told me a little old farmer who only used the tractor to pull wagons story that I think is true. Places where you would expect wear or play are like new.

Well if it is a 601 That makes it easy. All 601's I know of came with fuel gauges.
If the tank is orginal it is a 13 gal.
