pto grinds when trying to engage. must kill engine put pto in gear and then start engine. help please

If you don't have about 1 1/2 inches of free pedal you can adjust the rod to get it.After that if it doesn't work you are looking at splitting the tractor to fix. Either you'll need to replace as an assembly or replace parts.Depends on what you find will tell the tale. Your local Ford dealer should have the jig to adjust it up. Its not a thing you do without the proper tools. Good luck

Sounds like a clutch adjustment is in order..... ...think more specific knowledge can be had from Guru Bern...

A tractor is a tractor, etc. but different tractors have different idiosyncracies about them. I'll see if I can't find Bern on one of these postings, and get his E-mail address. In the meantime, ya just can't beat getting a shop manual ford the tractor you own. It tells and shows in detail every procedure you might have to do, and is well worth the money

thanks guys for the help. our ford dealer in town closed up business about 6mths. ago this tractor belongs to my pop and i've gotta do some adjustment on my jd as well.
