The fuel tank on my major seems to be wet on the bottom all the time, and the "wetness" is fuel. Other than replacing the tank are there any other ways to remedy this problem, sealing the inside of the tank for example? I don't want to buy a new one ... $$$$$$$$$!

Leaky Fuel Tank in reply to Jeff744, 08-24-2004 17:01:05
My '56 FMD leaked too. I sent the tank to a place in Minneapolis MN which I had used for the tank on my Oliver cletrac. They do a great job of welding the tank and they coat them too. I have heard bad stories of the coatings coming off after many years and plugging filters/carburator so I requested on the diesel tank to only weld and pressure test - no coating. Since it is diesel fuel and I keep it full I don't think I will have a rust problem. The Oliver gas tank I did have them seal. It looks good but I like to fix things for the long term and have my concerns on the coating

For an ATV tank there is a product called Kreem fuel tank liner and that will seal metal and fiberglass tanks. Maybe this would work

Hi
I have had problem with leaky / dirty fuel tanks too.

I have used a product called "por 15"
You get three products to do the job properly:
1> A degeaser / sediment remover.
2> An etching solution that etches the inside of the tank.
3>An enamel type paint that is poured inside tank. You keep turning tank over by hand so it reaches all internals sealing and coating the bare metal.

Follow the instructions to the letter and you end up with a fuel tank that is leak proof, and clean inside. The cost is about 1/10 of the price of a new tank. Money well spent!

PS I don't have any connection to "por 15 " company!

Good luck let us know how you get on.

Mark (UK)

My Super Major has the same problem. I can avoid the leaking by keeping it only half-full, but that's a pain. It seems to be leaking at the seam around the middle of the tank. On this same subject, does anyone know what the copper line is that comes out of the fuel tank, near the top, and goes through the firewall and terminates in a bolt near the back of the head on the right side? It's not the main fuel line, which is well defined, but something else. I'm clueless.

the copper line carries fuel ? :P

I dont have a leaky fuel tank but i assume since its not under any sort of pressure you could fix it with anything. Silage tape ? If i was to do it properly probably would take the tank off and solder it. Depending on the size of the hole or crack, you could perhaps solder a plate over the problem area.

That small copper line is the "return" line from your fuel injection pump. All fuel injection systems have one.

My Fordson power major 5000 diesel is running beautifully and is working hard. It pulls my center console 23' boat in and out of the "sea of Cortez" here in Los Barriles, BCS, Mexico.
I have owned it 10 years. Who knows how it ever ended up at the tip of Baja Mexico.
Saludos, mc

Thanks for the information MrChuck. I guess I have a bit to learn.

Baja? Sea of Cortez? 23' boat? Sounds like some of us have to pull hard duty. You have my sympathies. :-)

My 1961 leaks were the hood rubs on the tank. The 1958 does not leak, but the hood was removed by the previous owner so it doesn't have the same problem.Radiator shops usually can fix these type of leaks.I strongly suggest caution when welding fuel tanks, for obvious safety reasons.I soldered a 1958 Jeep CJ6 (not a CJ5) but flushed it thoroughly before ever putting a flame on it.Take it to someone who has experience.
