Rewiring a Super Major

The wiring on my '61 Super Major is a mess. None of the lights work and the leads to the solenoid, the voltage regulator and the alternator/generator (I don't know which of thes I have) look to be ready to fail at any time.

Where should I start in redoing the wiring on this tractor? Knowing very little about electrical components, etc., what advice would some of you experts give me? Should I hire a professional to do it, or can I do it myself? Should I go with General Motors components and throw away the old Lucan system? If so, what kinds of components? It seems that it should be a fairly simple project, but experience tells me otherwise. Any help of a general or specific nature will be much appreciated.

I am not an expert but can give you some general info. Are you restoring or putting this into service? That question would answer the Delco vs Lucas.I have the Lucas with original wiring and regulator. All I did was replace the positives and negatives off of the battery, replace the ends to all connections that were broken.I like generators but an Alternator will give you higher current and less cost if you don't want to rebuild the generator.I would do the starter circuit, charging circuit, and instrument circuits for sure as it elimanates a lot of headaches.

Thanks, Mark. This is helpful, although it is probably more advanced than I can do myself. I'm putting the tractor back into service rather than restoring it. I just want it to be reliable, clean and simple. I live in the Bend, Oregon area. Thanks for the information, and I welcome any more you may have.

A few questions, do you need a fuel tank or any extra parts? Did you get your cooling system taken care of? My home number is 938-9227, same area code as you.

Mark,
Do you have any extra grill inserts and headlights? I will be starting my rebuild of my super major tomorrow and would like to get the headlights and grills back in. Mine were missing when i bought it. I am also looking for the front badge.

Thanks, Mark. That's a great offer, and I may think of some things over the holiday. If you can give me a general idea of when you'll be coming this way, we can meet and have lunch (or whatever suits us) and you can look at my Super Major. I've just repainted it but it has some mechanical issues and the electrical problems I've already stated. But at least it's pretty! As far as the cooling system is concerned, I'm assuming it is one of the non-pressurized units.
