I have seen pictures of what appears to be an oil fill tapped into the side the late style pneumatic governer injection pumps... Why? I now
own similar and want to know why it is there.

THESE TRACTORS USE A SIMMS FUEL INJECTION PUMP WHICH NEEDS OIL TO LUBE THE INSIDE RUNNING WORKS OF THE PUMP ASSY. DESPITE WHAT MANY MAY THINK, THE PUMP DOES NOT GET ANY OIL FROM THE ENGINE. WHEN THE PUMP WERE BUILT THEY HAD NO WARNING TAGS ON THEM OR ON THE ENGINE TELLING THE OWNER HE NEEDED TO KEEP MOTOR OIL IN THE PUMP. TO MAKE IT EVEN WORSE, THE ONLY WAY TO PUT OIL IN WAS TO REMOVE THE SIDE COVER OF THE PUMP. MOST OF YOUR FUEL INJECTIONS SHOP AT THE TIME OF REBUILD WILL DRILL A HOLE IN THE SIDE COVER AND PUT A PLUG IN IT SO YOU CAN ADD MOTOR OIL. THE PUMP USES THE SAME OIL AS YOU USE IN THE ENGINE. AS THE PUMP RUNS IT IS NORMAL FOR IT TO LOSE DIESEL FUEL PAST THE PUMPING PLUNGERS INSIDE AND DILUTE THE MOTOR OIL IN THE BASE OF THE PUMP AND THIS USUALLY OVERFLOWS OUT OF A PIG TAIL LINE SCREWED IN THE BASE OF THE PUMP IF IT IS A VACUUM CONTROL GOVENOR PUMP. IF YOU HAVE A SUPER DEXTA IT CAN HAVE A MECHANICAL GOVENOR PUMP WHICH STILL REQUIRES MOTOR OIL BUT HAS A DRAIN PLUG ON THE BOTTOM AND AN OIL LEVEL PLUG ON THE SIDE AND HAS A PLUG ON TOP OF THE HOUSING YOU CAN REMOVE TO PUT OIL IN. IT IS VERY COMMON FOR THESE PUMPS TO BE DESTROYED FROM LACK OF LUBRICATION DUE TO THE FACT THAT NO ONE KNOWS TO PUT OIL IN THEM. I HOPE THIS IS OF SOME HELP TO YOU.

I will add oil as you suggest and hopefully quiet everything down a little :-)

There is also an adjusting screw with a hole drilled through the end at back end of the injector assembly. I assume that this adjusts the amount of fuel going to the injectors. Should this ever be adjusted. The shop manual I have doesn't talk about it.

The third pump is shot.3 out of 4 of the pumps are no good, or were rebuilt.The filler plug is a good idea then.Any suggestions were the correct location is to add a filler plug?Above the plunger guide line?

I'm not up on all the possible variations, but some of the pumps use engine oil in the pump "cambox".

If yours is, indeed this style, it should have engine oil in it, and it should be changed AT LEAST as often as the engine crankcase oil, because there is some internal leakage of diesel fuel in the pump, which thins the oil.

Hopefully, an "expert" will come on here to clear this up for certain!

This the late version of pneumatic type with 8 bolts on cover. The tapped hole was definately added after the fact... Maybe to bleed air from fuel.

I have a 59 power major and have been told not to fill the pump box with oil, it lubricates itself with fuel and blows out the excess thru the pigtail vent at the bottom. If you fill it with oil it will just run out of that vent!

Would it be safe to say the added motor oil would not hurt anything?I usually add oil to it in the spring when it has been sitting a few months.Only one of my five pumps has the filler plug, so it is not a factory item for sure.I would say if it is noisey then chances are it needs to be rebuilt.I hope this helps.

I've been driving the same '59 Fordson Power Major since the '60's and never put engine oil in the injector pump the first time- same pump, no problems.

That is good to know.2 of the 4 pumps that I own have rebuild stampings on them.There has to be some explanation for the bearings giving out.My 1961 was not run for seven years before I used it, so I was told.The pump seems fine after four years of service but it also has a rebuild stamping on it.The 1958 has sat for five years and should see service soon.I will use the extra two pumps that have not been tested to see what they do and post it here.
