I have a super major and have trouble engaging the PTO when equipment is hooked up. I keep getting a gear grinding noise. Cannot even get the PTO into gear. Any thoughts? Also, an implement dealer told me to refill the rear end with hydraulic fluid instead of 90 weight oil. Anyone else found this out.

Sounds like you have a live clutch tractor and either the plate is stuck to the drive plate or you still have the pin in the clutch pedal guide under the footplate or the clutch is not adjusted correctly. You should have between 1/2" and 3/4" free play at the top of the clutch pedal. If the adjustments and pin is correct try putting a load on the PTO with the clutch down. This may free it but it could take a little time.

DO NOT USE HYDRAULIC OIL IN THE BACK END. Hydraulic oil is for pure hydraulic systems and is no good to lubricate the rear axle components and bearings. In about 1957 Ford stopped using 90W gear oil and recommended a 20/30W Multiuse type oil in Engine, gearbox and rear axle of all Majors and Dextas. Normal HD30W oil is what I use in all my Majors and what we used in the Ford dealership on all the tractors.

Sounds like there might be a problem with your PTO clutch not disengaging fully.

There seems to be a lot of discussion about what type of oil to use for hydraulics. My view is that if you use remote hydraulics, you should use universal hydraulic oil because you are going to circulate with the impliment you are attached to. If you are using a closed system then SAE30 up to SAE90 should be fine depending on your climate.

Another question... I just looked at a mid-61 Supermajor on the weekend that I would like to purchase (restoration project). It had what appeared to be a PTO/hydraulic lever (looks like a gear shift lever w/ round knob) at the back of the tractor just above and to the right of the PTO. What is this for and is it original for this vintage?

Thanks

The lever at the back is the raised PTO option. This gives you a PTO indipendant of the hydrulics. The live PTO option only gives pto indipendance from the transmission. Raised plus Live pto is the most desirable combination. A must for using 3pl mowers wher you are stopping, raising etc but dont want the pto to disengage.

You should view this is VERY desirable.

Thanks Steven

RE: The raised PTO

The hydraulic pump is still driven by the PTO but the PTO can be disengaged by the rear lever? Should the clutch be used when moving this lever?
Can there be raised PTO and not be a "LIVE pto"?

Yes you still need to use the clutch. Charles is right about the raised revs, gives more PTO hp. Yes you can have raised PTO on a non live drive.

I use my super for mowing hay. I never use the front lever to disengage the PTO. Without raised PTO you cant use the 3PL with the mower bar folded up. Cant stress how desirable this option is.

The raised PTO is just a bolt-on extra ,gives you the option of using the lift arms without making the pto shaft turn , but it main advantage is that allows the engine to give 540 rpm at higher revs , 1600ish rather than 1150 so more power ,in Uk they are worth abou £150
