Is there anyway to positively identify a FPM from a FM? We bought a tractor that says it is a FPM and it has live pto. No serial numbers on engine so it was probably replaced. What would distinguish one from the other? Thanks

The Fordson Major Diesel never had a live drive pto. The Fordson Power Major came with live drive as standard. The position of the gauges and throttle on both of them were low down, along with the throttle being a lever outside of the high low gear lever. The gauges and the throttle were repositioned under the steering wheel on the fuel tank for the Fordson Super Major.

Live PTO was fitted to the Fordson Major Diesel in February 1957 as an option. To fit it in the clutch shaft was moved back 2" so all tractors with the extra clearance could be fitted with the double clutch at the factory. It was always an option on the whole range of tractors from 1957 to 1964 and never fitted as standard according to Ford Motor Company records.

Fordson Major was the early version and did not have live power. The Fordson Power Major was next and the Super Major after that. Both of them had live power

The advice here is good I would confirm the throttle position as a good guide. Sounds like someone has put on a Power Major bonnet. Live drive started around 1957.

All the castings have codes on them eg: A12V would give a date of January 12th 1954. If all the codes match within a month it would give you a good idea of the year of the tractor. Codes that were out of sequence would indicate new/replacement parts.

Also ask the question on www.fordson.freeweb/nl. Those people can answer a lot of queries as they specialise on Dextas and Majors.

The PM has repositioned gauges on top of tank along with throttle lever where as FMD has has gauges and throttle below tank.

There are no gauges above or below the steering wheel and the throttle is below the shifter. This is really confusing. The hood has Ford Power Major on it and the front grill says Live power live pto. I guess they both had live power and pto? There doesn't appear to have ever been any gauges whatsoever. Thanks

The fuel tank also has a small flat area for the gauges around the spot where the steering column goes through the tank and a small cover to hold the gauges. Some members on this site can match the casting codes to dates as well.Major motors can be ubdated internally to match the later tractors horsepower ratings. If Major motor runs good, then it should have enough power as it is.The point is that it might be a Major on the outside, but a Power/Super on the inside.

The throttle is down by the gear shifter and there is no flat spot on the tank. Also there doesn't appear to be a place for gauges either above the steering wheel or below it.

It sounds like a Major as far as sheet metal but you cannot be sure of that.It is a common thing to interchange the various parts when you cannot find the correct replacements. My advice is to write down all the casting numbers and post them here.Steven B, although I cannot speak for him here, has been able to identify tractors previously on this site using casting codes.Someone had a similar request earlier here. You have looked above injection pump on the engine block just behind the water pump?It should have some number whether it was a replacement or an original motor.Good luck.
