I have a Fordson 220? 4 cylinder diesel engine in my Mid 60's? Timberjack 205C log skidder that was installed in these machines instead of the 353 Detroit that most came with. The engine has developed a crankcase blowby problem and I suspect broken rings or piston. The engine has a simms injection pump and I am told by a source it is the same as a Fordson Major Diesel. Any advice on how to positively ID what engine I have for Model and serial and where any numbers might be located?

Hi Dan,

That engine is one of the old Ford 2700 series industrial engines. It is likely correct to say that they were used in some of the Major's. If not that particular engine, then a very close member of that family. I am not certain how to id it though, other than that you know it is a 220 of a given year. NewHolland does not support that engine, as it did not travel with the tractor division. It may still be supported through FoMoCo. I do know for certain that Lunenburg Foundry (Nova Scotia) marinized that engine, and they do provide parts support. Most parts are available through them, and probably aftermarket. Various other companies also marinized that engine, so depending on where you are, you could look into that. Otherwise, mabey TJ still supports it? HTH.

Hi Dan!
Sounds like you have a true hybird there! I'm not too familiar w/the major engines, but there may be a flattened surface on the front of the engine that may carry some numbers. The tractors they were used in only used a tractor s/n....engines weren't individally numbered. And Ford (New Holland) probably isn't going to be much help with parts. You will most likely have to go to aftermarket. Hope this helps a little!
