Ok, maybe someone out there can help me solve the next problem with my Super Major. The brakes work OK, but sometimes, especially if the tractor hasn't been used for a week or so, they'll lock up at the slightest touch of the brake pedal. I don't mean that they grab a little, they'll stop the wheel dead, even on pavement. They do seem to improve during the day with use, but the problem will crop up again after they've sat a while. I've had them apart a few times, and never saw anything out of the ordinary in there - nothing broken or frozen up, just the usual brake lining dust.

Has anyone else had this experience? Or better yet, has anyone else solved it?

Dave

Had the same with my county, which has the same barkes. Mine wouldnt lock the wheel though, but I would feel it pulling to one side. Solved it after many a srip down. Clean everything off with a rotary wire brush. Inspect all of the balls and grooves for rust pits, if there are pits better find some new parts. With the expander removed check that the three springs are not slack. If these are slack there may be insufficiant pressure to release the brake. The brake surfaces should be nice and smooth. The discs should slide on the splines with ease, dont put on too mutch grease though it only flings off onto the discs. Lastly clean out the brake housing, remove all of the dust and moisture. If the rubber boot is not in sound cond replace it. If you get it that the wheel doesnt lock but binds do not continue to drive, it will cause the expander to crack! I learnt the hard way!

hope this helps.

This was a standard problem even when the tractor was new. The cause is brake dust which is causing sticking on the splines. The answer is regular stripping and cleaning. I have other makes with the same brakes and they all suffer the same problem.

Dave: My FSM has the same problem. I blame "glazing" on the discs. Try washing all internal parts with methyl hydrate. Good luck....Superman

Superman - What is methyl hydrate? Where could I get some? I've never heard of it.

Maybe it is "brake cleaning fluid" that is at the automotive stores.
