Hi,
I am new to the tractor seen. I have just purchased an old Fordson power major. I have done about 16 hours woork with when I noticed that that the oil in the Linkage gear box was low so I purchased some new oil. When I purchased the machine there was Oil there in the range but now it was very low. It dosn't drip oil or anything I can only assume that it is coming out the rear drive whilst in use as It appears to be a leak there. Since topping up and after about 4.5 hours work the level is dropping again.
Question is this difficult to repair?
and secondly the oil now appears a little milky however it was fine when I check it when I picked it up. I can Only guess it is water in the oil ?? ( I de greased the engine etc and washed it off with a hose). Is this a rear problem, should I drop the oil and start again. Is it ok to keep using the tractor as long as the oil levels are ok till I can get it repaired.

Everything else seems fine starts first kick etc.

Any advice would be greatly appricated.

Thanks in advance

My Super had been sitting awhile. The oil on the dipstick looked clean when I first got it home, then it turned milky after use. There was water in the bottom of the case of course.I ended up changing it.With that in mind I looked at the other three Majors and they all had water when I unscrewed the drain cap.Condensation seems to be a problem on these tractors????You don't have to remove the plug to get the water out, but once it is milky it takes awhile for the water to seperate from the oil.Changing it is a safe bet but it takes quite a bit so have the oil on hand if you change it.

Leaks should be obvious, as you stated. Water is thinner and my thought is the water went out somewhere undetected and dripped onto the ground unnoticed? Maybe a cement slab for storing the tractor while you try to locate the leak?

according to my book it's a 59 power major. The same block was used by the later model super. This forum is probably the best place to ask about motors and blocks. Have you asked a good engine shop about welding the old one. That would be your easiest way out.
