Dexta electrical questions

Hello All, I" have a 60-something Fordson Dexta. I was replacing some wires yesterday in addition to looking at the electrical wiring diagram obtained from Oscar"s website (or a link within). I have a couple questions. 1) After looking at the diagram, I noticed that the + bat terminal is connected to ground? Should this be a positive ground system? My system is clearly a negative ground as my - bat terminal is connected to frame.
2) I"m still a little unsure if my generator/regulator system is charging my battery. Always had some trouble starting it because I don"t run it too often. After it was running, I just measured the voltage at the D and F terminals on the generator. At low idle, I"m getting about 16v , at full throttle, I"m getting approx. 45v! Seems to be the same on both terminals. Is this correct? Can someone explain to me how this works? Thanks guys, sorry for the long explanation, but I try to be specific.

Someone has changed the battery around and not done the same for the dynamo and regulator. All Dexta"s are positive ground (unless modified).

The dynamo and regulator may both be faulty but I would get a new regulator first. Disconnect the wires from the dynamo and without the engine running and before starting with the new regulator, take a wire from the terminal on the battery NOT connected to earth and hold this on the small (Field) terminal on the dynamo. Reconnect the dynamo and try your charge rate again. An easy way to check is a volt meter across the battery terminal with the engine running. Should show about 14 volts.

Or fit an alternator as suggested.

Thanks for the response... Ok, so the 45v on the generator terminals are way off, huh. Ya know, since the starter is really nothing more than a DC motor, and the voltage has been reversed, shouldn't it be spinning in reverse? Just a thought...

Where exactly (and what) is a dynamo?

Thanks fellas... I'm a novice.

I am English so we call a generator a dynamo. Generators are things that the electricity companies use to supply electricity to our homes. Its the language problem, two peoples separated by a common language :).

The starter will spin the same way whether you feed it positive or negative, its a bit more complicated than a basic DC motor.

Good luck they are great little tractors.

Thanks! I realized after the post that generator = dynamo :) I'm looking around for info/specs on retro-fitting an alternator in its place. Possibly one with a built in regulator. Thanks again!!

Sounds like the points in the regulator are stuck. If originality is not a concern, put a GM alternator on it.
