Hi,

I was looking for tips and hints for rebuilding a Fordson Major engine - or my boyfriend will be, I just pass spanners etc. We own a boat powered by a Major engine and a few weeks ago it went bang in quite a big way, we think its the main bearing. So can any of you guys help with some good advice and the best places to get reasonably priced parts?
My boyfriend is a pretty competent mechanic but is this going to reasonably straigtforward - will it ever go again! any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Becky.

Fordsons are not always rebuilt for sentimental reasons. You can buy just about every part to restore them here in Australia and in the UK. The US may be a litle diffrent but engine parts are plentyful and cheap.

There is a web site, www,bareco.com.au. This company has a US distributor. I have just rebuilt a Super Major engine using a bareco rebuild kit. For the price of a crankshaft re-grind I got a new crankshaft. My crank was already 40thou over so it was a logical chice. The crankshaft is made by a company called Edbro in Spain. This company built Super Major based tractors into the 1980s and they are good quality. The kit came with:

Pistons
Rings
Sleeves
Big Ends
Mains
Crankshaft
Thrust Washers
Gaskets.

You need to get a price for the engine kit and allow some extra to do the cylinder head and injectors at the same time. Also price second hand alternertives like a Perkins diesel. You need a engine between 220 and 250 CID by the sounds of it. Izuzu did a god 3.9 liter engine but parts can be expensive.

In the long run, if you rebuild that engine PROPERLY you will get your moneys worth out of it. You just need to do some homework.

Becky, most of the people that hold onto their Fordsons do it for sentimental or collector reasons. If the crank in your motor is shot, my advice (unless your looking to restore this boat with the original equip.) is to fit it with another engine that is easier to find parts for and service. Don't get me wrong I love my Fordsons but for ease of care and cost I would look down a different path.

My turn.

Find out what year and model it is first. The Marine motor that I have seen is different from the tractor engine.

What injection pump is on it?Serial numbers on engine?

You might want to try the marine message boards for more advice on the marine application. If you take this boat out on the ocean have a professional mechanic do it.

Good luck.
