Andy,

Rule of 9 works perfectly.

For those of us in the dark, please tell us what the Rule of Nine is. Thank you.

Rule of 9 = Add the valve numbers to 9. eg Valve 1 and valve 8, valve 2 and valve 7 etc. When valve 1 is fully open set the clearance of valve 8. and visa-versa, 8 open, set 1. Repeat this through the settings.

Only works on certain styles of engine.

Thanks, Majorman. Now I'll add that to the Rule of 72 that I seem to remember from my financial courses. Just having fun. I appreciate knowing what the Rule of 9 is. It would seem to only apply to four cylinder engines, and then only to those with two valves per cylinder, right? The minute an engine had nine or more valves the rule would not work.

It works with six-cylinder too but then becomes Rule of 13!

It depends on the engine. It will not work on any three cylinder ones I have come across or some of the four cylinder ones. I was taught it by an old Case and Fordson mechanic.
