The guy i bought my major off of claims that the brakes were done not that long ago. They don't work all that well though, at least not to my way of thinking. Are major brakes "weak" to begin with or am i going to have to haul the wheels off and have a look?!! Going down hills is becoming somewhat of a sporting event!

The brakes aren't that good to start with. Be especially carefull when you are going backwards, they are even worse than going forward.
If you are going down really steep hills, better pack a boat anchor and a length of chain connected to the draw bar just in case!
Regards,
Mark

I just did a much needed brake job on my '59 Power Major and they are actually pretty good now, 'course thats with the modifier that they are pretty bad at best.
The brake job itself is very easy with the trans mounted brake drums, and NAPA will reline the shoes cheaply enough.
My brother was in the RAF after ww2 and said that they had Majors for pulling aircraft around but finally changed to David Browns as they couldnt stop with a plane hooked on.
Good Tractor though.
