Hello all, I have a question on my super major 5000 , it is a diesel--has twin 12 volt batteries--is positive ground.I believe it to be a 1964?.. I was trying to get the generator to charge, checked it to see if it motored around it did,,checked the regulator found a few wires cracking so I replaced them.
I am trying to get it started now and nothing, ,,,If I jump across the 2 main large terminal on the starter solenoid I get juice to the starter, this is telling me bad solenoid, correct?..my question is I saw on a site for a solenoid that one for a super major looks different than the one on the tractor now, (the one on it now is the "normal"one you get at a store for a ford vehicle..the one i saw on the site was sort of flat with the 2 fat termials out the front, and connectors at the side of these,, is this the correct solenoid that I need, I think this is the second store bought I went through,, thanks for the help, and sorry so long of a post .. ok one more question, when I refer to this tractor woulod it be a "fordson super major 5000??I will get a picture of it,,it is gray body with a blue drivetrain.thaks pat

The problem sounds like the switch on the starter rather than the solenoid. Have you tried a connection from the battery terminal of the solenoid to the switch terminal. If the solenoid spins the starter this will prove that it is OK.

The switch on the starter is operated by the lever which engages the starter bendix with the fly wheel ring gear. It has a live feed and a switched line back to the solenoid.

Hello, it sounds as if you are correct, I needed a solenoid as well , there was no power once I jumped across the solenoid, I still have a problem though, I checked that switch with it off the tractor and there is indeed no power coming out the other side, I will need to get one, but I have no idea where to get it in the area, or online, any suggestions?/, I also say I have other problems because if I touch those wires togerther as in jump t hem and turn the key on the starter should crank correct?? all I get is a clicking in the solenoid...sounds like a dead battery, but I charged both of them to full capacity,, and then if I jump t he starter by itself say with another battery, by itself without pushing the plunger the starter spins strongly. if I push the plunger and then jump the starter , the motor spins but very slowly,, do I have ground problems,,, this is my next theory,, I guess new cables and good grounds??? thanks, also if you have a site on the net that sells parts for a fordson super major I would appreciate it, this has ENFO on the draw bar so I am assuming it is an english ford, everyone looks up regular ford super major 5000 and it comes up a totally different tractor,

well I spoke tooo soon, the batteries were fully charged, but apparantly at least one of them have a dead cell in them, I jumped them both, one with another tractor and one with a deep cell and the tractor started, after jumping across the 2 wires to the starter plunger, answering my own questions here, except i still need a place to get parts haha pat
