First Date nerves with a 54 Major

Just bought a BEAUTIFUL 54 Major diesel,

which I"ve always wanted since I was a kid in England 50 years ago - now I can die happy. Never had a diesel before - have a 52 8N and a 56 860 - both gas - easy to understand.
Questions - the diesel major hunts when it idles - which
means I need to adjust the damping valve - right? And where is the
manifold adjusting screw, which is also around the governor or injectors somewhere?
Oil pressure is a bit low - needs an oil
change, but how do I increase the oil pressure - must be a screw somewhere?
Any help appreciated - this tractor is the girl of
my dreams and I want this relationship to last forever!

Do you always adjust things on a first date? When I tried that I got my face slapped!

The adjuster is on the end of the governor housing. Slaken the locknut and tighten the square headed stud about half a turn, retighten the locknut and try the engine. Don't try the engine with the locknut slack as this may let air into the governor and affect your result.

Don't touch the adjuster at the rear of the pump near the stop control.

Good luck.

I am roaring with laughter! I've gotten slapped too when I was eager and didn't know better. Will follow your advice this weekend and let you know if I get dumped. Thank you for your advice and humor - we can all use more of that.

Change the oil and leave the rest alone. Adjusting things can get you into trouble if you are unsure. Get a manual.

These tractors will hunt a bit when ticking over. If it is really bad it is possibly a leaking governor diaphram. This may need replacing.

Oil pressure cannot be adjusted. If it is really low (under 10 psi when cold) the crank, bearings and possibly cam shaft and pump need attention.

Good input - thanks. The engine hunts at higher speeds, but not at low, and I have a manual and it reads as if adjusting the damping valve is pretty simple. I know to only adjust one thing at a time and mark the original setting as a start point. You still think I should leave it alone?
