I changed the engine oil and filter and cleaned the mesh filter in the sump on my 1955 diesel major and now i have 40 to 45 lb oil pressure the mesh in the sump was full of gunge and sludge what should the oil pressure with the engine warm and also at idle speed there is a slight knock in the engine yet sometimes it is not there any ideas.

I just completed a rebuild of a 56 Major and the oil pressure is right at 50 PSI at idle and higher RPMs.

What Majorman suggests is very possible. When I tore my engine apart, I found that the horseshoe shaped thrust washer that held the cam shaft in, had disintegrated into about 15 pieces. There were silver circles on the timing cover where the cam gear was bumping the timing cover due to cam shaft travel. So for sure there was some knocking at sometime or another. It was this way when I bought it and I only ran it long enough to load it on the trailer. Good luck. Robert

On a new engine the pressure should be between 40 and 50 psi at about 1500 rpm. This is the perfect situation. Even when they were in work back in the 50's and 60's a pressure of around 30 psi was good. I have seen them down to about 5psi when at low revs and warm and they have still gone on for years. A friend had a Power Major that never got over 20 psi no matter what we did short of a full recondition and it was still running OK about five years ago.

An intermitant knock could be a number of things but I would suspect camshaft end float rather than any of the main or big end bearings.
