I still have and use the Power Major that I grew up with baling hay in South Carolina US. In preparation for an eventual restoration project, I have been collecting spare tractors and parts. I found a motor that came out of a piece of logging equipment (I think it was a skidder)that appears to be like my '58 FPM. In the typical location for the serial number it has S301677. Anybody have any clues about the particulars of this engine? It has inline exhaust and intakes and pneumatic governor.

Julian: Your engine is out of a County conversion tractor. Is the engine already out or is the unit still intact? It was most likely a County Super 4 or Super 6 tractor or a County Fourdrive.
Keep us posted.

The engine was already out of the machine when I got it. Is the engine identical internally to the standard Major engine of the same time period?

Julian: To my knowledge, Dagenham Fordson 220 CID four cylinder engines fitted in skid units were identical to engines going into Fordson tractors at the time. However, be aware that changes were made during the production run of the Fordson New Major. Hence, you could have a Mark II engine in your FPM and possibly a Mark III engine from the County Fourdrive or Super Four it was removed from. Depending on date of manufacture... they could be entirely identical also. Brian may be able to share some detail on this. In the meantime I will try to check some dates on the introduction of the Mark II and Mark III engines.

Don is right, the engines were basically the same. The changes were mainly in their pumps, injectors or governed speed. At one time the engine fitted in the truck was the same as the tractor but rated at a higher speed. You would have few problems fitting the engine if it came from an agricultural application. Don is concerned because, if you are breaking something like a County Four Drive it is probably worth far more than your Power Major.

I appreciate the good comments. I never saw the piece of equipment the engine came out of nor do I know exactly what it was; I loaded the bare engine into my trailer off this joker's front porch! It had a newly rebuilt injector pump on it and that was good enough for me!

A man after my own heart. Thats how I come to be the new owner of a Nuffield 4/65 and Farmhand loader this Christmas. All I have to do is clean of the rust, get the engine running, find a new rear wheel,etc.etc.etc.
Oh Happy Days :)
