Hello,
I have a October 1958 Fordson Power Major (Engine no:
1488387) which I'm currently re-building the engine of with the help of a local mechanic.

I need to fit 2x replacement Connecting Rods.

Can anyone confirm the type I need? I have been told that I need to get the ones with the large gudgine pins 1 3/8s is this correct? I've looked at the four I have all have the part number: 6205B, can anyone tell me if these are the ones with the larger gudgine pins?

Finally I've had to purchase an engine re-build kit and new crank shaft, previous one had been over sized and re-ground, does this effect which size connecting rods I need?

Does anyone have a handy source for Connecting Rods in the UK? I'm currently looking a orginal ones at £200 for the pair or £25 secondhand for a local Fordson breaker, in Kent. If he has the right type, I'll check this weekend.

Thank you for your time.
Simon

Your connecting rods are E1ADDN-6200-C and not the number you quoted. These are the rods fitted to all engines from April 1957 till the end of production.

I would suspect your mechanic assistant if he does not know that the bearing shells changed when cranks are reground but the connecting rods remain the same:). Reground cranks are fairly common and can be ground to 0.040" undersize without any problems.

I would go for the £25.00 units but would get them checked for alignment by a specialist engine rebuild shop before fitting them.

Thanks for your help with my question, Majorman.

I'm the novice, bought my first tractor last summer, a 1972 Ford 3000, same age as me. The 1958 Fordson Power Major was parked up by my Step Father five years ago, now I've decided to get it up and running.

Just ordered new crankshaft, engine re-build kit will see about the connecting rods Saturday.

Simon,
Just being nosy but why do you need new rods? Unless they are missing or the engine has suffered major damage, the rods can be straightened and rarely need replacement.

Hello Majorman,

The connecting rods where both damaged, the shells on the number 4 con rod were none existant (worn out or missing) and the piston was stuck. Number 3 had already been repaired in it life, with a raised groove in it. Did I mention the crank was beyond repair, it had been over sized and couldn't be salvaged.

Thankfully, Robert Wraight in Faversham, Kent came up trumps a pair of 6200-c con rods £25 each. The number I mentioned must have been a casting number as these also had the same number 6205-B on both. The Power Major parts manual I have agrees with the number you suggested.

I don't know if I mentioned, I'm based in London and the tractor is in Kent, so I don't get a lot of time, the odd weekend here and there. Spent this weekend in Kent harrowing and topping with my Ford 3000.

Hopefully the engine will be rebuilt soon by my mechanic (Dave's an ex-Ford Invicta tractor mechanic) and we will put back and see what else needs doing. It has been sitting a round for 5 years.

Thanks again.
Simon
