I recently made aquaintance with a lady that has a fordson dexta and she needs help getting it to run. I have been around john deere tractors, but know nothing of this one. I need some help in assisting this lady. She is being out alot of money on nursing home care for stepmother and cannot afford help. Problem is it will not start. When given a short blast of ether it will start, then die. I just read not to do this on fordson. It has had a new fuel pump installed. I tried priming it. But have gotten no fuel to injectors. I have not had much time to check this out. Fuel filter is full but I am not sure if it is going thru the fuel filter. No fuel is reaching the injectors. Should I be able to use the hand primer to get fuel to injectors if fuel filter is not plugged.

Also I found and read alittle about the valve under the fuel tank. Cold weather valve? Would someone explain all about it to me.

How do I determine what model this is.All I can find is Fordson dexta on the grill and an emblem on the front. What is horsepower? This appears outwardly to be a fair old tractor. They owner that died had just installed new rear tires on it, so I assume it was worthy enough to justify this. Overall Pretty straight. Just a little greasy. Apparantly an old paint job.

Would appreciate a rough estimate of value?

Thanks for any assistance

Arnold

3 cyl no start MAJORMAN help in reply to arnold may, 04-17-2005 19:55:03
I took the fuel filter out and it was full of rust and sludge. The spring in the bottom of the fuel filter cannister was broken. I suspect that debris may have gotten into lines and injector pump. I cleaned out the cannister and refilled with diesel and primed up to that point, but was unable to get anything out at injector. I turned over engine a little but nothing came out. Is there anyway of clearing any debris out of injector pump if it has taken it in, or is it a rebuild time?

Also, since the spring in the fuel cannister is broken and the filter I was sold as the (correct) replacement did not have the proper size holes for gaskets I plan to reengineer something to make fit. Is there a replacement spring and where can I get a correct fuel filter?

On the injector pump there is a line leading to the fuel intake. How does this operate?

Thanks for your help.

If the fuel filter was full of rust and sludge i would take the time to drain the tank at the very least, and rinse out the tank (will need to remove steering wheel)as there is probably water in the tank as well as rust. Water in the fuel can seize an injection pump overnight

You do not say if you bled the screw on the pump. Unless you get air out of the pump you will not get fuel from the injectors. Bleeding the fuel filter is not enough.

The pump bleed screw is just under the injector pipes to the front of the pump.

The pipe you ask about is a fuel return pipe from the pump.

The problem you seem to have is that you need to bleed the fuel system to get rid of air. On the top of the filters and on the fuel pump itself are bleed screws that need to be loosened, then using the hand pump, drive all the air from the system.

Then press the heater button on the dash for 30-40 secs, press the pump in the fuel tap a couple of times (making sure the little tap on the manifold (if fitted) is turned on), press the starter and away she will go.

If this fails, try slackening off the injector pipes and cranking the engine over till diesel comes out.

If she is firing on ether there is little wrong with her. A SMALL amount can be used to get her going but if used regularly will damage pistons and rings on these engines.

Age can be anything from 1958 to 1964.

These are a brilliant little tractor about 40hp. They are at a premium price in Europe some fetching up to £3000.00.

Re: fordson dexta diesel 3 cylinder: diesel in oi in reply to Majorman, 04-17-2005 22:52:54
I found a new problem with friends tractor.
A large amount of diesel in oil. The fuel pump appears new. I am thinking her father(that passed away) probably put on a new fuel pump shortly before death in an attempt to fix problem.
I read on the forum that it is probably seal on injector pump. Can this seal be replaced without rebuilding pump? If I remove the pump and have a professional repair it is there any problem to reinstalling it other than timing and priming?

Is there anything else that would cause this problem? If the pump has never had any repair, would it be feasable to rebuild while off or just repair immediate problem?

Thanks for help.

Arnold,

The seal in the pump would need to be replaced by a specialist repairer although it is possible to do yourself if you have a clean dust free room and a gear puller.

You have a decision to make. Did your friends father change the oil? or is the diesel there from the previous problem. Pump work is very expensive so I think I would change the engine oil, fill with new and see if the problem re-occurs. The cost of the oil is far below the cost of getting the pump checked.

If you go to Link Dexta manuals are available on the site and the chaps there will mail you details straight from the Fordson books.
