I need info.& practicality of changing the present pto on 1956 FMD to a live pto if all parts were available. My FMD is a low hr tractor that is in great shape.I have a complete later model FMD with live pto avaliable. The motor threw a rod out the oil pan.All other parts are good Thanks,Bucky Badger

The easiest way would be to take the engine out of your good one and change the flywheel and clutch with your "parts" one. Then just fit the engine to your "parts" one.

Depending on the age of your "good" tractor the live system may not fit as changes were made in the castings.

Neither of your tractors had live PTO as both were produced before it was introduced. You have a February 1954 and a March 1956. The live PTO was not introduced until February 1957 and with it changes to the clutch linkage, gearbox housing and gearbox.

Someone must have modified your parts tractor at some time in its life. It would be interesting to see the casting code on the gearbox housing near the clutch linkage.

If you want to put the complete gearbox housing, clutch etc. in your "good tractor" it would mean spliting the tractor at the engine and the rear axle which could be dangerous if you have no lifting or spliting equipment. Therefore the easy way with the least problems is to change the engine over to the "parts tractor".You would also have to change the flywheel and clutch from your "parts tractor" too.
