Recently installed a new drive member(engine half)on a 1960 Power Major. To aid the installation, all the lines leading to the injectors and the supply line from filter were loosened, the injector pump mounting bolts removed. After the drive unit was in place we timed the pump following the procedure in the manual. We then removed the bleeder at the top of the pump housing and operated the hand lever on the lift pump until we had a steady flow of fuel at the bleeder. We then cranked the engine with the injector lines loose until we saw fuel coming from all lines. We then cranked the old girl for what seemed like an eternity but no go. We then removed the injector lines one at a time to see what kind of pressure we had and what kind of volume. This procedure is new to me so in my ignorance I'm not quite sure what to expect but because of my knowledge of the principles of a Diesel I am of the opinion there is not enough pressure(opinions come cheap and are not necessarily gospel). This engine ran prior to replacing the broken parts but provided enough smoke to hide a battleship in a Naval engagement. So what do you think I should do, lease the old girl out to the Navy? Your ideas on this dilemma will be much appreciated.

Think you have probably put her back together 180 degrees out. This is quite easy to do when you change the coupling as the timing marks all line up in two positions each revolution.

Turn the engine so that all your timing marks are in line with the clamp bolt on the engine half of the drive underneath the drive shaft or look in through the oil filler cap and see that the valves on no.1 cylinder are closed and not "on the rock" one closing, the other opening.

Then remove the pump and turn the drive 180 degrees so the mark lines up again. Reassemble and she will start straight away.

In a world of mostly rocks, you are a GEM. I wonder just how many others you have helped in their time of need. Thanks for being the benevolent person that you are. The illustration in the book(repair manual) shows the clamp bolt on the top side of the drive shaft when all the marks are in line and I assumed(shouldn't do that) it was gospel. So much for that, tends to make you a doubting Thomas. Also checked the position of the valve rocker arms to make double sure. After a brief encounter with the starter the old girl exhaled a few puffs of smoke and off she went. Guess she didn't want to be relegated to service with the Navy(as a boat anchor).
Thank you again for helping out with a second opinion Dr. Majorman
