I have a Dexta 144 or 152 running as the auxiliary in my boat. Firstly the after market pressure sender failed during a rough passage. They engine ran for an additional 16 hours with out any change in tone. On replacing the VDO Pressure sender I only have 7psi (I have tested the sender with a Mechanical Gauge all ok)
Question 1 = Is the pressure sender hole after the oil filter?
Question 2 = Could I have a piece if gunk stuck in the pressure relief valve? If so would compressed air applied to the pressure sender hole help to clear this?
I need to exhaust all possibilities as the engine is located under the cockpit and would require several days work just to access the oil pump.
Help or Ideas Please
Thanks Luke

I think I would change the oil and filter then check again. I do not think gunge in the pump or sender unit is the problem. It is possible that gunge has blocked the intake filter in the sump. However I would suspect that it is time for a complete overhaul if she has not had one for a few years. That engine could be over 40 years old.

Hi Majorman

The engine has done just over 1000 hrs since Reco 50 hours since Oil and filter change. I removed the sump strainer it was clear. a few little carbon bits were romoved from the outside the strainer. Question is the sender befor or after the filter?

Sender is in the main oil gallery to the crank and other bearings after the oil has passed through the filter. Filter is first item after the oil pump. There is a bypass valve in the filter to let dirty oil into the main gallery if the filter becomes blocked. 7psi means you either have a major leak somewhere or the pump is shot. 1000 hours is nothing for these engines.

What grade oil are you using? Shold be 30W

Thanks
I am using SAE 30W oil. But not Rimula the last time. If I remove the complete Oil filter assembly from the block, can I pressure test back through the gallery to the pump and pressure release valve.

If it is the pump how much room under the sump will I need I could jack the engine up 8 inches giving me 10 inches to work under. I can access the front and right (air intake) side.

A pressure test is not going to tell you anything, If you remove the filter, then you have removed the conduit of the oil from the pump to the main gallery. Running the engine like this could cause major damage. To pressure back to the pump with air will also tell you little as the air will bleed round the pump gears and out of the intake filter.

The pump is mounted on the front main bearing and connected by two pipes to the intake filter and the block. There then is a short gallery that takes the oil up to the oil filter. The two pipes from the intake filter and to the block have been known to crack. If this has happened to the intake pipe, you would not normally have any pressure at all. Also the nuts on the pipes may be loose allowing oil to escape.

It will be tight to work on in those dimensions. You will need to get the sump off to get access to the pump assembly. To remove the pump you will also need to take off the timing cover. Only you can see if this is possible in situ.

LOL

Thanks Majorman

I will start the big job on the weekend. Are spin off Oil filter adaptors readly avaliable through New Holland. As the std Oil Filter is a nightmare to access and normaly falls apart while raeching around the engine.
