Major Diesel questions

I am the 2nd generation of my family to have this tractor and as my Father is not available to ask questions of I figured I would start here. Facts are it is a 4 cyl, Marked as a "Major Diesel", non-live clutch (high is down right?). We use it for bush hogging duties only. A 6 ft HD bush hog is 3 point on the rear.

It wound down and died on me with no warning the other day. It needs a rebuild and I am trying to figure out where to start. I know I can probably just rebuild the injector pump and it will run but I would like to take the down time and rebuild the motor as well, its last rebuild was probably more than 20 years ago and we use it pretty hard and it has been getting smokey and weaker for years. So a couple of questions:
1. How do I tell exactly which model I have(model, year, displacement-i don't know if there were different ones available)?
2. Are rebuild parts available, sleeves, pistons, clutch since I am there already?
3. Aside from sleeves, pistons, bearings, are there any other parts I need to pay attention to on my Fordson?
4. I have never split a tractor before, how hard is it to do what I am talking about? (I have extensive experience with cars and trucks but nothing more involved than plugs and points on a tractor, if I don't have to split it I imagine I could do the work)
5. If it is too much for me to do is there a shop in the Northern Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, lower Penn. area that anyone can recommend for the work?

Thank you very much for your patience and any information you have would be appreciated. i have been trolling the boards and learned some but I figured I would ask direct questions.

Firstly I would not touch the injection pump. Tis is a specialised operation and requires equipment not normally available. Get it done by a diesel shop.

You have not said why it died. Could be fuel related like a blocked filter or the filter in the fuel tap in the tank.

1. Post the serial number. Normally found behind the starter on the flange or under number 1 injector pipe on the block. If no serial number then the casting codes on the block or near the clutch linkage will help. (H28J as an example).

2. Parts are available from Bareco.

3. Think you've got them all except valves and injectors.

4.They are pretty easy to split but heavy. You will need some type of trolley or hoist. DO NOT TRY IT ON TWO TROLLEY JACKS. I have split them on fork lifts and loaders as well as home made trolleis and the Fordson Special tools.

You will have to take the engine right out to do the bearings and clutch. Search on Oscars Fordson site,>Link

Good luck and take care if you decide to have a go.

I looked all over the chassis for numbers and the only ones were stamped into the rear axle housing. They read "4010LBS".

I looked all around the starter and under the exhaust manifold. as well the rest and didn't see anything. Are the numbers I am looking for cast into the block or are they stamped? It has several layers of paint and if they are stamped I will probably have to strip paint to find them.

Thank you very much for your replies and information,
Mark

The number you quote looks like the weight. The serial numbers on the flange behind the starter or under No.1 injector will be stamped on, the"F24H" numbers will be cast. On the clutch linkage side they should be pretty clear.
