2 questions on Majors

Hi again
I know how much power the Major has on paper, but I keep hearing about the number of plows a tractor can pull. So, what is a Major - a 2, 3, or 4 bottom tractor?
Also, is the generator set up somehow that the operator controls the amount of battery charging, or is it another system. My battery needed to be recharged.
As always, many thanks for your input.

We had a 1960 Ford Power Major with which we pulled a 4-16 Ford semi-mounted plow. Clay loam soil of SE Minnesota, about 6" deep. Rarely did we need to drop to 2nd gear, usually pulled in 3rd. Good power, excellent traction, easy on fuel

Never did understand the plow concept. It surely must depend on the furrow size and the depth. I have a petrol/kerosene Major of 32 indicated horsepower that pulls two 14" furrows with ease in second gear at 10". I also have a 51 hp Super that handles the same plough in third gear but would struggle to lift a three furrow plough. But mine is a reversible plough so would that make a difference?

You cannot control the charge rate manually. This is all done by the regulator box behind the aircleaner or behind the lower dash panel on the earlier tractors. (This is unless your tractor has been modified to take an alternator). The regulator can be adjusted to increase charge but this is not advisable without the test plan and the proper gauges as you can boil the battery and blow both dynamo and regulator if you get it wrong.

Ours is a '54, so I'll look behind the dash to see what we've got. This puts me in the right direction. We'll be borrowing my uncle's 2-14" set of plows. I was just curious if I could get away with 3 furrow.
thanks

I have a 1954 Major Diesel and I pull a 3-14 pull type plow in 2nd gear. In heavy soil (gumbo) It pulls nicely in 1st gear. (I can keep up with a super 88 oliver pulling the same size plow.)
