Major water pump and thermostat

I've been reading the Intertec manual and it says that there has been two different kind of water pumps in the Majors (changed at serial number 1425097). Also the thermostat was changed at the same time from a "non-shrouded" to a "shrouded" type. My 1955 FMD is built before that change and both of the thermostat types should work in it according to the manual.

I went to a parts dealer today and their book says that all the Majors (1952...1964) use the same thermostat and water pump. The thermostat that they sell is a "common" type that is different from both of the correct ones pictured in the I&T manual. There's supposed to be a some sort of by-pass passage in the cylinder head and the thermostat shroud would open and close it but there is no shroud in the thermostat that I bought. Also the difference between the two water pump types will have something to do with the same by-pass passage.

My question is that is it really that important that the correct type pump and/or thermostat are installed? Is the correct operation of the by-pass passage that necessary? The parts dealer seems to think that it is not. I didn't buy the pump yet (they hadn't got it in stock) but I except it to be the later type which would be incorrect for my tractor. It seems that the old pump cannot be fixed with a repair kit. I would really appreciate the answer. Thank you in advance.

Quote from the Fordson Workshop manual published by Ford in 1963: "At engine number 1425097 changes were made to the water ports in the pump body and it is essential that pump bodies and assemblies for tractors prior to that engine number are not used on later tractors. It is important that the correct gasket is used as the location of the ports is different on previous and current parts".

In the Ford parts book two different water pumps are listed so there is no interchangeability between the two pumps.

The later thermostats can be used in both but the earlier 'stat should not be used in the later engine.

Thanks for the answer, Majorman. I"ll just have to ask some other patrs dealer for the pump. But how about the thermostat? The one I bought is not either one of the correct types but a common automotive type. The only similarity to the thermostats pictured in the manual is the temperature value (74 deg Celsius).

So, I have understood that since I have the earlier type tractor there is no need of shroud or anything. The earlier thermostat is not meant to open or close any by-pass ports. Is this correct? But for the later type tractor it would be essential to have the correct shrouded thermostat? Again, thank you for the answers in advance.

Your thermostat will be OK as it is the correct temperature. The shroud did not move, only made the flow of water go around the coils not directly on to them as did the earlier version.
