Moving a Fordson F

Over the years I've bought and sold a a fair number of Fordson F's. A few that I've bought rolled freely where the majority will skid the rear wheels if you try pulling them. It's my understanding that a worm drive rear end shouldn't let the wheels turn if being pulled. On these free rolling tractors, I've never pulled the rearend apart to see what is broken. Which part breaks? Assuming that something is broken.

I normally use a forklift or Bobcat with pallet forks to move my Fordsons around by picking up the rear axle off the ground then pushing or pulling the tractor.

George, Usually nothing is broken. Against all engineering principles and practices the rear differential will turn the worm allowing the Fordson to be moved. It shouldn't but it does. This is an age-old arguement in mechanical engineering class. Sometimes the grease in the differential is so thick that nothing will turn and the wheels will skid. I pull them and push them around quite regularly with no problems. In cold weather the wheels may skid a little. I have a collection of quite a few Fordsons and it's much easier than starting them to jockey them around.
