need help asap! if anyone knows about our tractor please write-don"t have a manual-having trouble with gears-especially reverse very noisey- need to know about gear/lubrication charts etc. for 1955 diesel - tractor stuck in driveway - any info greatly appreciated- thanks!

I have a fordson major the rear the rear linkage is not working was told may be a problem with a valve. Any ideas and where this valve is would be great.

I have an E27N Fordson tractor which has a perkins diesal engine, when I got it it had a collapsed bull pinion shaft bearing which caused the LHS wheel to lock, I"m unsure if yours is similar. If in front of the axle you have a brake drum then this may be the culprit. To check you"ll beed to remove the brakes and have a look inside, the bearing is quite large and easilly seen, if its in pieces, not here at all or missing any balls then this could be the problem. Also are you sure the clutch is engaging? ie is it trying to drive but jamming or is the back wheel fully locked?

I am not a fordson expert but i can recomend you to look at www.fordson.freeweb.nl for a free downloadable manual. There I found lots of information when I was curious about Fordson Major.

You don't give a lot of information but here goes.
Gear oil = sae 90W or 30W which ever is available.

Noise in reverse could be bearings which would lock up the gearbox but another cause is the transmission hand brake if fitted. If you have been using this to stop or have driven with it on, the plates will be welded up. As this works from the reverse idler gear it could be your problem. Low oil in the gearbox can also cause this problem.

Yes, still in drive. added 2 gallons of gear oil-started it & it drives in forward but sounds like something slapping around inside. goes in all 6 gears & in reverse really loud rough grinding. had cover off under the seat-everything you can see looks brand new & nothing loose- any suggestions?

You are looking in the wrong place. To see into the gearbox, take the plate off where the clutch linkage piviots and has the gearbox filler and level plug on it. The gear selectors are also here and will come off with the plate. It is a small hole but with a light you should be able to see all you need. Try getting a bar between the shafts to see if you can get any movement.

Did you put the oil in here or in the plug at the back of the seat?

I was under the impression that both routes for rear oil would deposit oil in the same place due to the shared resevoir. Where does the oil go from rear axle fill hole vs. the side fill hole?

They are two seperate compartments and there is a seal on the large gear to the pinion and the PTO drive shaft.

Look at your tractor and you will see the oil levels on the gearbox filler plug and it is far higher than the marks on the rear axle dipstick.

If either of the seals fails, the oil will transfer from the gearbox to the rear axle leaving the gearbox empty.

i put 2 gallons of 90w in the transmission & it stopped all the noise but do not see the oil level plug- thank you very much - if you have any questions about draft horses, which is my expertise, I would be more than happy to help you out! I love this tractor alot -it really helps me out with my chores & my farming, little enough to clean out horse pens, big enough to plow our wheat & beans with as plowing is my major time consumption- am used to farming with horses - one filler hole - easy to see! and the level hole is in the back! real easy to see- (horse joke) thanks again -til next break down- will be checking in regular as you have really helped me - this new computer thing in real cool- living in the woods of far north Idaho where nobody knows what a fordson-major tractor is - it is nice to be able to discuss problems in a timely manner with someone so knowledgable.

Happy to help. Glad its going now but it takes about 4 gal. in there. Level is marked on the outside of the filler plug where it screws in. Probably covered with gung. That tractor is just like a horse! It let you know when it needed "feeding", it stopped work!!

Just spotted your plight,I have one that ran without oil for god knows how long but with little adverse effects.Another good tip is to keep a stong antifreeze/inhibitor in the coolant as they are prone to corrosion around the engine cylinder liners this can be terminal
