That number corresponds to a Factory Reconditioned engine from 1951. I might be wrong, in that the F replacements also started at R0001, but that wouldn't be like Ford. He wouldn't like to have duplicate numbered engines. Even with Model T's, they did some funny things to fill in skipped numbers, etc.
Does it have a water pump? Does the radiator have ribs cast into the top tank? Is Fordson cast into the front of the top tank, or is it up and down the sides? Are the front wheels cast iron, or made up of stampings and spokes? Does the engine have the larger bore? Was the original paint blue or grey? Is there a serial number stamped into the bellhousing flange?

You appear to have some info on the 'R' Serial Numbers can you identify this one. My Power Major E1A has no visible Serial Number. However it does have the following nos:-
Engine E1ADDN -6050-G stamped underneath - 13167
Engine Block machined face:- R 61272 Simms Fuel Pump SPE 4A 75S 527 stamp marked underneath - 293848
The remaining Stamp marks refer to F20C - F28C.
Have you any idea what Year / Month and Serial number please.

John: I'm using Stuart Gibbard's book, part one.
He specifically lists replacement engines for the N and E27N. Nothing about the New Major replacements. One thing, the New Major continued the same sequence of numbers. Until 1380939, the number was stamped on the flywheel housing. After that it was stamped on the block. That would have been in 1956. Your number "13167" is too short, but if there were two more digits after it, it would be a 1954 number. If so, it should be stamped on the bell housing.
I actually don't know anything about replacement engines for the New Major.

Hi Matt, I'll try to help you out. Your serial number is a replacement block probably installed or provided by a dealer. Unfortunately there is no way to date it. The tank is from an Irish Fordson 1929-1932. this probably replaced the original tank. The Irish Fordson would have a built-in magneto and provision for a governor on the right side of the block. Your chain drive mag is either homemade or an aftermarket item of which many different designs were used on the F tractor. It sound like you have a tractor which has had a few later parts installed. Hard to say without more info. Many found today have been made up of a couple of tractors as most all parts interchange from year to year. Look on the rear axle housings and the front of the dash for casting dates which it may or may not have. The pan or front cover also may have a date as they were usually retained from the original block. Look closely as they may be hard to find or not there at all. Hope to help you out. Regards, Butch
