Gents,
I think I need a new battery in my 64 FSMD. Can anyone recommend a type, and make? Cold cranking amps? With the battery in it, it turns very slow and only a few times. Although it holds a charge well. I just think the battery is probbably the wrong one for the tractor.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Dave

I am not a lektikal injunear, nor have I ever played one on TV. However, we have a starter shop in the next town which is run by a very knowledgable and competant fellow. Here goes: the only thing better than lots of CCAs is MORE CCAs. I like group thirty one commercial truck batteries. They are built for harsh duty and come in sizes up to 1150 CCAs. Also for diesels, even my little super dexta, double aught cables. Nothing screws up starters any better or faster than being "starved". If you are building heat on the cables or starter check the connections, if that does not resolve the problem get the big batteries and cables that will deliver the energy. It is still warm out, but right now I have a Moline Vista G cranking on ONE big group thirty one battery. When cold weather gets here I will put another in the empty battery tray. Starters will last next to forever if they can work with gobs of energy available. best, Phil

Dave, mine did the same thing when I bought it. It was definitely a bad starter, that is provided that all of your connections are tight. I got my starter rebuilt for about $160, new cables and it worked just fine with a good battery. Good luck, Robert

A battery with cca (cold crank) 660 or more.
take your old battery to a battery shop and they can test it properly most do it for free.
the old boy who ownd my FSM only had a car battery in it 480 cca i got a bigger one one that would fit in the battery box.. and at 680 cca
i also got a diesel 4X4 tray back i got similar kind of battery in it too a 660 cca..
both start first time every time,,
and did nt cost too much,,either.. around $100.
shop around got to a battery specialist and chew there ear,, i learned a lot when i did.

Now you got me thinking. I will try a good car battery with over 660cca, but I wonder if the starter is bad. It just barely turns over, and the negative cable on the battery starts to heat up. Any suggestions on the starter?

Sounds like you have a bad ground. I had a similar problem when I first got my 55 Major. The ground looked fine (it was the old braided cable style), but it would heat up when I cranked it over, which it only did very slowly. I changed the cable to the heaviest I could buy at TSC, cleaned the area on the bell housing that it bolted to, and I haven't had any problems starting since. The new ground cable is a heck of a lot cheaper than a battery too, so I would change that first.

I forgot to mention that my fordson have been switched over to a positive ground, with a Delco alternator. If your fordson is original, it will be a positive ground.

Whoops. I meant that my fordson has been changed over to a NEGATIVE ground, while the fordson was originally a POSITIVE ground. Forgot to put my brain in gear before I started typing. Sorry about that.

Alright, sounds like we have a concensos (if I spelled that right) I will investigate the starter and all connections further. I have a braided negative ground wire going to the block (at least I think it is the negative ground). I wounder if this thing is negative or positve ground now? I will have to check that out too. Thanks for the help!
