hello guys I have a 60 something ford super major diesal, it runs great, I have it hooked to my wood chipper at the time, I am going tio get to restore it with my 14 yr old soon, he wanted to keep her, well my question is do they all steer hard, this has no power steering, but it steers harder than any other tractor I have been on, there is no binding that I can tell, It apears that maybe the former owner may hqave had a loader on it, I cant see anything that is bent or worn, any suggestions, thanks pat

Hi. I've got an old 1956 fordson new major and the steering has always been unbelievably heavy. I recently measured the front tracking and found it to be towing "in" quite a lot. I measured between the rims and found their to be a 5/6cm difference. Im in the process of trying to adjust it but its all rusted together! Even so, im not sure that it is possible to get the tracking paralell with the current track with setting. I had a look and measure at another major and found it to be set as narrow as possible with the tracking approx 1cm toe in. I have watched many majors being driven and the majority seem to turn very easly - a lot easier then mine! Im convinced that it is the tracking and when i manage to free it of rust I will set it paralell. Hope this helps a little.

The tracking is fixed on these tractors and cannot be adjusted.

We must be a lot stronger here in England as power steering on Majors is a rare thing although there are thousands still around.

I would suspect the thrust bearings under the stub axles are the problem. If the front axle has been loaded these can wear out.

My Majors can be steered with one hand without a problem.

Thanks for the reply. I hadent even considered that the trust bearings under the stub axles could be the cause of heavy steering. I think I need to give the front steering a full inspection and service.
