What would be the correct maximum engine rpm for my 1955 Major Diesel? Some books say it is 1600/1700 and some say 1900 (no load rpm). What is the correct value?

Max HP at 1600 rpm, max torque at 1150 rpm, max "no load" speed 1900 rpm.

So this means that I can set the rpm to 1900 when the gear is in neutral and the PTO and belt pulley are both disengaged? Should the clutch be depressed during this?

I was planning to measure the rpms from the PTO shaft. How this"ll effect to the max rpm setting?

I"m asking this because I have to readjust the rpm range because the set screws were off from the tractor for a while and the previous settings were made with the timing set near to 0 BTDC anyhow. I suspect that this was made to help the starting with hand crank because the starter was broken and not in use for many years.

You just need to set the maximum rpm with the tractor not under load. It will not matter about the clutch.

You can only measure PTO revs at the shaft and this should give 722 rpm @ 1600 rpm. The belt pulley gives 779rpm at 1400 rpm in high gear.

Are you sure the timing is 23 degrees out? I would not think the engine would run this far out. The movement of only one degree either way makes a massive difference to a diesel and how she will run.

Thanks for the answer, Majorman.

When we got the tractor it hadn"t been run for several years. Among a lot of other things we checked the engine timing and at least it seemed to be set only a couple of degrees BTDC. We didn"t check how much it was exactly. It could be that the lines were not exactly aligned when we checked the old setting (we never started the engine with that setting). Anyway we set the engine timing to 26 BTDC (with the lines in proper places) as the manual said. Then we started it and it ran fine but not when the throttle was in idle. We didn"t do anything to it at that time the clutch being stuck and everything. We just wanted to make sure it would run. Now after a couple of years the restoration is in a point when we will be attempting to start it again. Just need to get the outtake manifold from the shop. After that we"ll adjust the rpms.

When she idled did she "hunt" a little? If so, this is normal at low revs.

I don"t remember that so well any more, Majorman. We will try to start the engine as soon as I get the outtake manifold back. It may take a while. I"ll get back to this board if and when I have more questions then. Thank you for sharing you knowledge, Majorman.
