I"m having problems with the brakes. These are supposed to be heavy duty brakes but they don"t work at all. I opened up the chamber to look at them, and it has alot of oil in there. The pads look worn but still very usable. I was thinking of drilling a hole in the brake chamber to allow the oil to drain if any was to seep in. Any body have any thoughts? These are dual acting disc brakes (supposed to be dry) on a 1964 fordson super major diesel. Thanks,
Dave

You need to replace the oil seals behind the brakes and possibly replace the discs. These get hard and shiny. The brakes are not the best in the world and are subject to sticking if they get dusty. Best to clean them out about once a year.

Ther is also a proceedure for setting them correctly.

Thanks Majorman,
I figured you would be able to reply. I took the rest of the mounting off, and examined the seal. It looks fine, no oil has passed through it. I am thinking the oil came from somewhere else. Not sure but possibly through the axle locking mechanism or one of the internal bolts. Anyway, I am going to keep the seal because it looks great, and try to replace the pads. Was thinking about making a small hole with a cotter pin so that this chamber can breath. What do you think?

The oil will come down the splines and get on the brake discs.

If it is leaking through the dif lock shaft there is an "O" ring on this. It will mean taking the bull pinion shaft out and removing the dif lock mechanism, removing the shaft and replacing it. This could be a bit of a job. I would not advise trying to let the oil out of here, there is your life at stake if you don't do a proper job and stop the oil getting in. IMHO.

The shaft should pull out when you have the brake housing off. I would put a couple of bolts back to hold the inner housing in place and to keep the shims lined up.

IMHO?, thanks for the advice Majorman. I think I am going to clean everything up and install new pads. After closer inspection the amount of oil is probably normal for its design, (which is not very good at best). I will check it again in a year and decide then wether to go further.

Any tips for the pad replacement? Is there a special tool to punch the new rivets?

I take mine to a brake re-liner locally. Sometimes the ones I get back are bonded.

Back to the oil, These brakes always remained dry ther was never any oil in that area in service unless there was a seal problem.

IMHO? In My Humble Opinion ;0)

ok,
Thanks for the advice, I will take a look at the o-ring for the bull pin, its the only thing that could be leaking. I used a little permatex on the inner bolts. I don't know how, but I think they could also be letting some oil through.

The brakes come in a kit with linnings and rivits. Re-lining is not a common thing in the U.S. I'm sure there is a place I could send them, but I bet I can do it myself also.

I got some plates re-lined on a 55 oliver at our local John Deere dealer. I would call your local dealers, whatever color. If they have been in business for long they are bound to know someone who has the equipment to re-line them correctly.

I also suggest changing that seal. IT may look good but the oil came from somewhere and it will pay in the long run not to overlook any possibilities. And seals are pretty cheap.

I can't see how it would hurt to drill a hole to the lowest part of that cavity, either. Lots of them on other makes of tractor had a special drain hole to channel the oil away from the brakes if the seal leaked. There might be one in there already.
