Greetings,I have a later engish engine on my tractor. While removing the valves and reading my manual concerning timing I noticed the surface of the push rods where they meet the valve is recessed. Now the dumb question,is this normal or from wear?If from wear I need new push rods.If this recess is normal how best is it to read .20 on a feeler guage to time the valves? Does this make sense? Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul, This is from wear. Over time the valve stem beats the pushrod (lifter) and dishes it. If this is the case you are probably not going to get the desired clearance. You have a couple of options. You can put in new lifters (a big job) or you can put in new valves ( a not so big job) While the valves are out you can grind the lifter surfaces flat(in place) and adjust the new valve stems accordingly. If they are recessed as you say they are you probably need a valve job anyway. Valves are "everything" on the Fordson engine. It's the best favor you can do for yourself. Have fun!, Butch

I removed the lifters and built them up with wire welder and put them in the valve grinder where you cut off the valve stems and ground them off.hope this helps. it takes more time but less money. Al
