I am going to look at a 1953 Fordson Major this weekend and need some help. I dont' know much about these tractors except they are british and blue. What size/brand of diesel engine do they have?? Are parts hard to get/expensive?? Anything in particular I should look out for on this tractor?? Any Major related websites you can direct me to?? Thanks VERY much!

In 1953 hydraulics and pto were an option. You could have PTO and no hydraulics or hydraulics and PTO.

As Miles said Live PTO did not become an option until 1957 and even then few tractors had it fitted.

The Power Major from 1958 and the Super from 1960 are more likely to have live PTO but not certain. If a live PTO clutch gives problems be sure to have a large bank account to call on.

The engine is Fordson's own diesel, one of the best engines in the world. Very simple and rugged. The tractor is built like a tank and will go on for years. Very easy starter.

Parts may be a problem but most are available. There were thousands of these tractors world wide and parts are still made by Vapormatic, Sparex and Bareco as well as CaseNewHolland.

Check that the oil is not white or creamy which would indicate water in the oil. This is due to liner cavitation, not a Major job (!) but could be expensive if you can't do it yourself.

When she runs you may hear a very noisy clatter from the injection pump drive. This is a normal noise and no problem. It is wear in the fibre drive pad and even with a new pad it will start to clatter again in a few days.

If it is a 1953 model then there is no live PTO/hydraulics (Someone correct me but I think 56-57 was first introduction?). The easiest way to tell if you have a "live" version is the high-low range lever. If high is up then the tractor has live PTO

Regards
