I have a 53 Power Major diesel. When I remove the hose off the intake the RPMs increased slightly. I checked the air canister for any air restrictions and I could not find any. I have had the injector pump rebuilt and the governor is working properly. I also checked to see if I have a vacuum leak and there is not any. What could be causing the problem.

I have to agree with Majorman.
Let me tell you...if your major suddenly develops huge horsepower and RPMS, look for a hole in your intake hose. Happened to me a while back while running the manure spreader. Felt like the old girl hade 60hp all of a sudden! Looked under the hood and noticed the big hole in the worn out hose. Replaced the hose, and now the major is more itself, which is to say the RPMs returned to normal with the hose and filter functioning properly.

The drop in engine revs when you put the aircleaner on is normal and you do not have a restriction that was not built in, as long as your aircleaner is clean.

The engine was designed to run with that air cleaner and any change may cause you to find out what the con rods and pistons look like when they come through the block.

The early Majors like yours had a hollow cast crank which can break if the specifedc power/revs are exceeded. Maximum HP is 40 and maxiumum revs is about 1600. These engines will do nearly 3000 rpm but beware of flying scrap!

Check the revs with a rev counter when the aircleaner is fitted. This will tell you if they are as specified.

Thanks Majorman that's what I thought. I wanted more revs for tractor pulling. I will leave the empty air canister on the tractor and readjust the rev as good as I can. I do not have a working tach so I can not get a accurate rev count. Worst case if engine blows I have 3 more engines plus 3 more tractors to play with.

Terry,

If your tractor is a 1953 it will not be a Power Major. If it is a Power Major from 1958 it will have a steel crank that is far stronger and can be "abused" :0).

I think I would put a later engine in her if you have one and the original engine dates from 1953.

Your airfilter must be restricted. Just fine dust can cause this. Some tractors have a gauge that works on the differential pressure between the atmosphere and the intake manifold. When the differential gets to high it causes a warning light to glow on the dash. Diesels can be seriously damaged by running with a restricted air filter since this causes an increase in the fuel to air ratio and thus higher temperatures in the cylinder. This is in addition to power loss.

I took a canister that has been gutted out and put just the bottom filter in and I still have restriction. I also tried an oil soaked filter and I still have restriction. The bottom filter was cleaned and not clodded up.
