Thanks for the info guys.I am in eastern Canada,its fairly cold here in winter but the old major starts pretty well.Is there any other reason for the vibration that comes to mind.Maybe timing ,my tractor is a 1961 super i think.She has live pto and differential lock,also qualtrole three point hitch controle.I had the injector pump rebuilt and had all injectors tested.I also put new sleves and pistons,rings and all bearings into it.Other than vibration it works great blowing snow.

I had the opportunity many years ago to work on a customers Super Major Diesel that had a mean vibration. He said he bought it new and it had always vibrated so he thought it was normal until he used his neighbor's SMD. By coincidence my Dad had an SMD which is why he brought the problem to my attention. In search of the cause I ended up dismantling the engine and found that No. 4 piston was a bit heavier than the others. I can't remember how much, but it was enough that the difference could be felt when holding it in one hand and another piston in the other hand. I remember taking all of them to the local post office and confirmed weighets on their scale. Three weighed exactly the same. One was heavier. All of them looked identical and if memory serves me correctly they all had the same part numbers inside. In any case I replaced the piston, did a complete overhaul and it ran like a charm. The owner passed away a few years back and I aquired the tractor at his sale. It still runs great. I agree with Majorman that the clutch may be out of balance. I wouldn't be the first time I found the aluminium pressure plate with a piece having broken off allowing one of the components to fly out. In that case the symptoms are like an out of balance tire. The vibration will vary as speed changes. I'm not trying to ruin your day. Just tossing out a couple posibilities.

Can you give us some idea when and at what revs the vibration occurs?

It could be the clutch itself but it is very unlikely to be timing if she starts and pulls OK. There is no lee way at all to adjust the timing, it must be spot on to the manufacturers spec.

I have no tac on the tractor but i used one after i rebuilt her to set idle and high speed governor stop. I set her high speed stop at 1550 max under no load.I had shop manual for tractor at the time but have since missplaced it.I used manual to find timing for injector pump.I think high speed was supposed to be 1600, if i remember right.I do have some play in the injector pump to drive coupler if that could be the problem.I used to use the tractor for irish mossing,you would not believe what we put them through....thanks again for the replies ,,,great site

Slap in the pump drive will just be a noise and will not cause a problem. You can tighten this by sliding the drive from the engine end closer to the pump and traping the fibre pad firmly. A new pad is the best answer but this will wear and rattle in a couple of years. We never replaced them 'till they broke.
