Is there a way to check the coils on an early model F to see if they are any good? I get spark on the points but nothing thru the plug wires. I removed the plugs to make it easier to turn the old girl over. The former deceased owner has a 12 volt battery hooked up thru some switches to the coils. Not sure what that's all about?? Thanks for any help!

The the magenets on the flywheel of the Fordson F as well as the model T car will slowly loose their strength and the spark will become weaker and weaker. This was often overcome by using a battery to "hot shot" the coils while starting the tractor. Unless the magneto was very weak, it would provide adequate spark after the tractor was running.

Thanks! I knew there had to be an explaination for the battery!! I tried to test these coils, but I think this Fordson sat outside without a coil box cover. They soaked up water, froze how many times?? I took them inside to dry up and they split open dumping a charcoal substance out. I guess that means 4 new coils!!

You can hook 6 or 12v directly to the coilbox thru the wire from the magneto and then rotate the crankshaft. Whenever the commutator connects the primary winding in the coils you will get a continuous series of spark. You should be able to rotate the crank and get spark at each plug this way. It is very important not to back feed direct current into the magneto as this will demagnitize the magnets...

Which way should the battery be hooked up (polarity)?

It does not matter which pole you hook to the coil box, just be sure that you are in no way back feeding the magneto.

It has been a long time since I have seen my father"s Fordson run, but the memories are coming back. His tractor had a box for a Hot Shot battery mounted below the coil box and a 3 pole knife blade switch on the front of the coil box. The idea was to use the battery for spark when starting the tractor and then switch to the flywheel mag after it was running. I remember my father checking the coils by putting the switch in the battery position and turning the engine over one cylinder at a time and listening for each coil to "sing". A singing coil is a good coil.
