Anybody out there running their Major Diesel in a 12V configuration? Any idea how many amps you're pulling when you crank it over? Mine's drawing up to 600A. Starter has good bearings / no binding, good brushes, coils check out OK. Will barely crank it, regardless of temperature. Engine seems free...

Thanks, guys. Sorry for the delay in response. All this playing outside in the woods bought me a case of strep throat.

I was reading a constant 400-450A with peaks of 600A, and the starter windings all tested out the same resistance-wise, so I took the plunge and bought a new and bigger battery today. (Battery cables / connections were sound, and I had recently replaced the solenoid with one from an old electric golf cart.) It starts pretty well, I guess. That Bareco starter sure does sound nice, but I checked into it, and just can't justify that right now.

Guess I just gotta get it charging again. Calves got out and decided to chew on the wiring harness. Lucky I found the dipstick...

When I looked into it, I was told that the original configuration had 2 batteries connnected to the starter. I think they might have even been 6 volt. You can reserch that, but the first thing I did was replace the ground wire (braded) with a good 2 guage battery wire. Then I replaced the positives, just to be sure. Also bought a new battery. And after all that, I only saw a slight improvement in starter turing power. So, I decided that I would like something new or rebuilt. Thats when I decided to go with the barco.
The Bareco starts like a jet engine. It turns the engine realy fast and starts like a new car. I am very glad to have put it in. It comes with a 4 position switch as part of the kit. Which replaces your lever thingy. I decided to go ahead and rewire everything since I had it all apart. Theres not that many wires anyway. I also decide to replace the lights and add one for rear. Its coming along nicely.

You cannot compare the load from that starter with an automotive starter. This one will draw up to about 450 amps in normal conditions.

I would suspect starter windings if you are having sluggish starter problems.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I was unaware of Bareco, and am waiting on a quote from them. I am, however, hesitant to order one unless I know that mine is bad. Any idea what the original starter should draw? It's pulling way more than an automotive starter, but maybe that's normal?

Take a look at this post:

I had a bad starter and replaced with the Barco. Also Alternator to 10s1 with help from genesee. All new wiring and guages, and lights. Did"t spend to much and its like brand new now.
