Hey major communicators, PLEASE respond ASAP! I found a fordson major diesel with a sherman loader. Owner knows nothing else. I'm sure these are elementary questions but if someone could help a possible future Major- owner make a good decision. 1)year,model,etc. how&where? 2)how should it run & sound & what to look for? 3)will it be a part nightmare? 4)can it be a reliable hobby farm tractor in general and in winter if its a good one? 5)any other info you can add would be great! 6)without knowing specifics, some kind of $$$$$ range? THANKS GUYS

Why don't you find a retired tractor mechanic to go with you when you check it out? Ask at the Coop or at the Bank. Unless you live in a warm climate, diesels aren't that easy to start in the winter, especially if they have 50 years of wear. These kinds of tractors usually are put up for sale if the tires are shot, the clutch is shot, or the hydraulics are shot. New tires will be $600, engine overhaul, $1000, injector pump, hydraulic, budget $500-$600 each. Scrap value will be about $500.
Look at what else you could buy for about $5000.

I agree with cdmn - I like my Major, and might keep it many years doing things around the place. That's only in warm months though, and I'm way up in the great white north. I've never tried starting when it's bloody cold outside, but I've got a small gas tractor with loader to work the snow etc in winter. At auction I paid $1500, and mine was in decent shape. My next machine will be mid 60's at the oldest, and preferably late 70's. After that they get too fancy for me - cup holders and cushy seats.
Bring friends and/or second opinions with you. Unless they've got a newer machine they just bought, there's likely a surprise for you once you get it home.
