There will be a mechanic on duty when I look at it because its a business. It looks great on the outside and if it seems to operate good now will future parts with effort(how much effort?)be available somewhere? Also if tractor kept in and or plugged in help it to start in winter? Somebody give me the good reasons for having one because something keeps you all owning one. Where on tractor will I find #'s etc. so I can let you know what it is and what I find? I'm going Sat. AM Thanks!

freddie,
I love my major, and it is the "major" chore tractor around our farm due to the loader on it. Most parts are still available through aftermarket dealers (Bareco, Sparex), and some parts are still available through Ford/NH. The biggest downfall of the major is the lack of live pto/hydraulics, in my opinion. I live in NE PA, and it gets plenty cold, although not as cold as our northern neighbors get. I have a Group 31 battery, and if it is very, very cold out I use the fuel enrichment button on the injector pump, and it starts each and every time. It has a inline heater, but I have never used it.
The advice on the engine, clutch, etc is good though, as you will have much more money wrapped up in it than it is worth if you have to make the big repairs. Seems people always like to feed these old diesels either too, which will kill your compression quicker than anything. Anyway, I paid a little over $1300 for my Major with a fully hydraulic loader on it, and drove it home about 3 hours the same day. Still runs like a top.
If I remember correctly, the numbers will be mounted on the flat body panel between the battery area and the engine, under the hood.
