Oscar, When you start your tractor in cold weather do you have to use the primer? I would also like to know where to get parts, such as pistons and rings, for a 58 Dexta? Mine will not start in cold weather and either has been used to start it before.

Bernie I forget the name of the parts dealer there in Raleigh, but the Perkins dealer will be a lots cheaper than a tractor company for the kit to rebuild that motor. You can take your serial # to any Perkins dealer and they will be able to cross it out. The last 2 kits I got from them the price was less than half of what Ford wanted. NAPA quit offering them here, they might still have them where you are. Mine will crank without help down to about 20 degrees and then I just put a battery charger on boost with it. I never have had to use the primer or glowplug either one. I would guess that the ether has gotten to the pistons, but I would compression check it before I rebuilt it. When the injectors are needing cleaned and serviced on these engines they are tempermental about cold cranking too.
I use 15W40 Mobil Delvac oil and Chevron off road #2 fuel year round.

How much of a job is it to clean the injectors on a Perkins? Can it be done at home?

Not really Bernie. If you don't have the test equipment it would just be a guess when you put them back together. I never saw anyone get them close yet.
