F Commutator Adjustment

On E-bay, and from Lang's, I have noticed a tool that is advertised as being needed to precisely set the commutator. From the pictures, I really can't tell what it does. What does it do?

From reading the Fordson Service Manual, it seems that when starting, you move the spark lever "upwards to the third or fourth notch". "A little experience will soon teach you where the levers should be placed for proper starting. Care should be taken not to advance the spark lever too far, as the motor may bacck-fire." Once the motor is running, the instructions are to, "drive with the spark lever advanced just as far as the motor will permit. But if the spark is advanced too far a dull knock will be heard in the motor.." "The spark should only be retarded when the motor slows down under a heavy load or when idling. Care should be taken not to retard the spark too far, for when the spark is late, instead of getting a powerful explosion, a slow burning of gas with excessive heat will result."

From reading the above for starting and running, it would seem that there is no need for any type of fine adjustment on the commutator. If it is capable of both retarding too far, and advancing too far, then what does this tool do? The Ignition System section of the Service Manual does not spell anything out in particular about adjusting the commutator.

Found out what the tool is for, and thought I'd post it so that others would know. It is a tool that allows you to center the coverplate precisely around the shaft that rotates within the commutator. Since the coverplate is bolted to the block, it is possible that it can shift from one side to the other as you tighten it, and the end result is that the commutator body, when in place, will not be on the exact center of rotating shaft. The effects of not having the commutator on the rotating axis would probably include a minute shift of timing from cylinder to cylinder, and maybe even make the felt seal less effective.
