I was attempting my first oil change for my Dexta and on locating the sump plug I also noted a large domed plate fastened by 5 nuts to the sump. Does any have any ideas what this is? The plug itself is proving difficult - any great ideas on how to loosen it other the BF&I?

A pipe wrench with cheater bar.. use a small floor jack and scrap piece of wood to support the wrench while you put your arm into it.

( works fine on fords! )

Oil screen Re: something strange under my Dexta! in reply to botchit, 05-06-2006 07:03:08
That is the oil screen and should be pulled once a year.Or if you just bought the tractor. Once out you can reach in the pan and remove any sludge that may have settled in the pan. To drain the oil losen the screen let it drain then remove. Once drained heat the oil plug with a torch till hot. When it cools down remove or if it still dont come heat again it is a tapered pipe plug. When replacing get a Hydraulic pipe plug with a magnet and that has an allen wrench head this will stop the plug from sticking down where the head may be damaged from bumping anything. I have Dextas and MF 35 with P3 perkins and all are the same.

Replace Filter Re:Oil screen Re: something strange in reply to botchit, 05-07-2006 00:13:12
You may clean the SCREEN from the pan with fuel but not the filter. Replace the throaway filter cartirage with a new one. The filter is located on the left side of the engine in the round steel housing that sticks down. Just unscrew the bolt and pull down. Just in case your tractor has had this unit replaced with the more modern spin on unit just unscrew that filter and replace with a new filter.
