I am looking at what i think is a Fordson Major deisel tractor.I looked the tractor over and could not locate a serial number. However on the right side of the engine near the cylinder head i found the numbers 14467 43 stamped. Can anyone tell me the year model from this number? Also the tractor appears to be in decent shape for its age.The rear tires are over 50% tread and the same size but,not the same brand. The fronts are weather checked severly. The lift and the pto worked although it would'nt stop turning. The steering gear and linkage showed very little wear. The brakes were good and all the gearing in the tranny appeared quiet and good.It did not have power steering. The clutch was ok.The tractor had a low battery and had to have starting fluid to start. When started it ran good with good oil pressure. He said that after the tractor warmed up it would start without the fluid. However i can see a pump and injector rebuild coming. From what i have described can anyone tell me what they think a good offer for this tractor would be.Thanks.

The tractor is an August 1957 Fordson Major Diesel. These are a good solid workhorse and very reliable.

Alarum bells start ringing however when you mention it needs starting fluid. These engines never need starting fluid unless they are very badly worn. They usually start if the battery will turn them over a couple of compressions.

I would therefore think that the tractor will need a full engine overhaul which could cost up to $2000.00 +. This would need to be reflected in the purchase price.

A good tractor here in England can be got for around $1500.00 in ex farm condition.
