Hi,

Waddayathink? What weight oil should I use for my '56 FMD? Summer and winter weights would be appreciated. I live in Southern Alberta, Canada. It can get as high as 100 in the summer as as cold as -40 in the winter.

That's too much spread on the temps are you sure you're not in Texas?. If the engine has been on kept on none detergent oil I would keep it on it until rebuild. If it's been on detergent oil I would use Mobil Delvac, it holds up better than Shell Rotella or Chevron Delo. Delvac does'nt fume and slobber out as bad as either one of these other diesel engine oils.

Burrhead,

Thanks for your reply. You are right about it being too much of a temperature spread. It sometimes doesn't seem fair. I also have seen snow in every month of the year up here. Once (Aug 22 1992) we got almost 2 feet!

Anyhow, just before I bought the tractor in question, it had been completely rebuilt, and I could find out what kind of oil he put in it after the job. If he was running no detergent oil, should I keep on? Also, 10-40 summer and 5-30 winter? or should I go heavier in the summer?

Since it was recently rebuilt I would go ahead with the detergent oil. It has'nt had time to build up sludge and varnish in the engine yet.
Yep the 15-40 is fine for summer and you need the thin for winter. Good luck with it, sounds like you should have a good tractor for a long time there.
Our temps here have been going from 30-32 in the morning to about 70-75 in the evenings. That makes my hips and knees hurt too much.

Sorry to hear about your hips and knees. We have been having a great winter up here. I replaced all of the windows in my house on Dec. 27th, and it was T-shirt weather (about 65 degrees). One thing about southern Alberta, the weather is unpredictable. A week ago it was 15 below, but for the last few days the chinook has been blowing, and it is right around 35 degrees. I was quite pleased the other day when for the first time I tried to lift a big round bale with the loader on my tractor, and it picked it up with no trouble at all. My Grandfather used to have a '55, which was the first motorized vehicle I ever operated. It outlasted him by about five years, just packing it in last year. It was sold for parts. I am a big Fordson fan, and was pleased as punch to get the one I did. Just out of curiosity, what do they go for dowm your way? I got mine with the front end loader, and just rebuilt, painted, etc for $4000 Cdn (around $2800 USA). This is a reasonable deal for our oil boom inflated area.

Sounds like yall got good weather for sure. It's warming back up here a little bit now. The sun shined all day today. You got a heck of a good deal on the tractor compared to here. Mexicans come through here and bought up the Majors and anything else people would sell them years ago to take back below the border. I looked at a good running Major without a loader about 2 months ago and they asked $4500 for it. I was gonna wait a week and go offer him $3000 cash. When I went back he had sold it for $4000 check. Usually around here you get alots better deal for cash instead of checks.
I have a Dexta that I've rebuilt the engine and put tires and painted. I was offered $3000 for it, but I don't know what I would replace it with. I love the Dexta's and Major's.
I need you to send me some of that chinook next August when I can use it.
